What's behind our Name?

SPOTS was created in May 2023 and was inspired by a very personal & important cause. In November 2022 our youngest son was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis Type 1, which is a rare genetic disorder. The first symptom we noticed on our four month old were cafe au lait "SPOTS," which continued to grow in size and number as the months went on. We casually mentioned them to our pediatrician and were referred to a neurologist, where an MRI and genetic testing confirmed the diagnosis. Since then we have been on a journey discovering all we can about the disorder and wow, has it been a learning curve! We are passionate about creating awareness in honor of our boy.

Neurofibromatosis affects approximately 1 in 3,000 babies and causes tumors to form on nerve tissue. Approximately half of the occurrences are inherited, while the other half are spontaneous genetic mutations. The tumors can form anywhere in the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord and nerves. Usually the tumors are noncancerous (benign), but sometimes they can become malignant. Symptoms can remain mild but complications can include: loss of vision, hearing impairment, learning disabilities, heart and blood vessel problems, and severe pain. While there currently is no cure for Neurofibromatosis, treatment in the form of medications or surgery can reduce symptoms to control pain and tumor growth.

Where it all began...

I began my career in the public schools where I served children ages 3-14 for five years. I served elementary and middle schoolers in self-contained units, delivered services to small groups needing articulation therapy, and worked hand-in-hand with educators to assist children struggling with executive function deficits and language disorders.

I also gained a lot of experience working with children on the autism spectrum. I provided large group therapy in classrooms to facilitate generalization of vocabulary, social skills, and turn-taking. Along with those therapy responsibilities I also served multiple years as the speech-language pathologist on the district’s multi-disciplinary preschool assessment team.

In that role I screened and evaluated incoming students with my team members. Upon completion of the assessments, I helped develop individualized education plans to meet the needs of the students I served.

Eventually, I made the move!

In the summer of 2017, I started as a part-time employee of a local private practice. There, I evaluated and treated children ages 2 to 15 and saw the benefits of consistent one-on-one therapy.

I developed lasting relationships with my clients and their families, and in the summer of 2018 transitioned out of the schools and into private practice full time!

In 2022 I put my career on a brief pause after my second son, Antonio was born to assist with his medical needs. When I was ready to jump back in and pursue my passion I decided it was time to go out on my own!

Some fun facts!

As a provider I have always believed in the power of intervention and have walked with numerous families on paths of their own. Creating relationships with caregivers and children is a special part of our profession, and helping them navigate through the uncertainties of developmental delays unknowingly prepared me for my own experience as a mom. Both of my boys have benefitted from a variety of services including speech therapy, feeding therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy which has only expanded my knowledge and passion as a provider.

Through passion and purpose, we hope SPOTS will allow us to serve our community with Skilled and Passion Oriented Therapy Services while simultaneously creating awareness for Neurofibromatosis.
